On the left is the original flag design for the city of Tempe, and on the right is the proposed redesign.
Moodboard
On the top left, there's flags of United States, Arizona, and the Maricopa County that the city of Tempe geographically under. 
In the process of brainstorming, the neighbor cities' flag designs are also referred. On the left side of the board is some of the better designed flags that follows the principles of flag design. On the right side, there're other similar flag designs. 
Sketches
8 iterations were hand-drawn prior to digitally produce the redesign.
Considerations of the geographic location, climate, and historical context were taken.
3 iterations were digital produced based on hand-drawn sketches.
After a session of design analysis, I created the final design taking the best pieces of all iterations.
Final Design
The color yellow is used to represent the sunshine. The color blue is used to represent the water: Salt River which was compared to the vale of Tempe in Greece. Hence the origin of the name.
The sun rays pattern is adapt to align with the flag design for the state of Arizona.
Mockups
The flag design is designed to be simple and easily used in other context. Such as a coffee cup, T-shirt, or as stand-alone logo.
